What was the Largest Hail Stone Ever Recorded in the United States?

April 6, 2015

Storm Damage MichiganWith spring storms looming around the corner, you might be wondering what big the largest hale stone ever recorded in the U.S.  was.

Was it the size of a golf ball? Tennis Ball? Soft Ball?

Try a small soccer ball. That’s right, the largest hale stone ever recorded was recorded was a seven-inch (17. 8-centimeter) wide chunk, being almost as large as a soccer ball.

The official measurements: Seven inches with diameter (17. 8 centimeters) plus a circumference of 18. 75 inches (47. 6 centimeters).

A Little Help is Cool.

The committee who measure the stone included members of various government agencies, including The NWS’ predict office in Hastings, Nebraska, provided the measurements.

“Were it not for that quick thinking of nearby residents, who found the hailstone and kept it from melting, we would’ve not known it existed, ” said Jay Lawrimore, whom chairs the committee.

The hailstone has become at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research with Boulder, Colorado, where it will likely be preserved indefinitely.

“Were it not for the quick thinking of local residents, who found the hailstone and kept it from melting, we would have not known it existed,” said Jay Lawrimore, who chaired the committee.

The previous record for largest hale stone was: diameter of 5. 7 (14. 5 centimeters) inches wide, a circumference of teen. 5 inches (44. 5 centimeters), and was found in Coffeyville, Kansas, on Sept 3, 1970.

According to NOAA, large hailstones can drop at speeds over 100 miles (160 kilometers) hourly. They can sometimes contain foreign matter, such since pebbles, leaves, twigs, loco, and insects.

As one can imagine, these hail stones can do quite a bit of storm damage.  Hail brings about nearly one billion us dollars (U. S. ) in damage each year.

Michigan Hail Storms

Michigan has some pretty bad weather, too, such as a storm in April of 2014 that  produced estimated 80 mile hourly winds north of the Grand Rapids area.

But while Michigan has seen its fair share of hail storms over the years, nothing can quite compare to that monster of a hail stone. In a state where denizens are not at all surprised to see sunshine, snow, hail, and rain all in the same day, Michiganders can take comfort in knowing their homes will not be bombarded by soccer ball-sized ice balls.

Your Basement is Flooded: Here’s What to do Next

March 30, 2015

Flooded Basement in Michigan

Deal with a Flooded Basement in Michigan

You have come home to find that your basement is filled with water. If you have a flooded basement in Michigan, the most important thing is to not enter the flooded area until you are certain that the area is safe from hazards.

Put Safety First!

Entering a wet basement can be more than just hassle, it can be dangerous.Consider these dangers when inspecting your basement:

Chemicals – If flooding has occurred, make sure that your cleaning supplies have not been added to the floodwater as they can mix and cause harmful inhalants. Also be sure to properly ventilate your home during the flood cleanup process.

Pollutants – It’s not pretty, but sometimes a basement can be flooded with sewage. These fluids contain bacteria and transmit disease, so be sure to wear protective gloves, glasses, and a face mask while inspecting your basement.

Gas leaks – If you smell gas, leave the house immediately and call for help. While a flooded basement usually doesn’t cause gas leaks, often times gas leaks and flooded basements can be associated with the kinds of disaster events, i.e. tornado, heavy storm damage, earthquake, etc.

Electrical Shock – This is very possible if electrical appliances are wet, or if your outlets are submerged in water. Turn off your home’s power at the main breaker until you remove the water.

Structural damage – This is not common, but a flooded basement in Michigan may be indicative of structural damage. If you suspect damage, call your insurance adjustor or local restoration company.

Also Consider:

If the flooded basement is due to a burst pipe, turn off the incoming water valve. This will stop the flow of water and minimize the water damage. You can usually tell if the flooding is due to a busted pipe because the flood water will be clean.

If you are uncertain if it is a busted pipe or sewage, do not flush your toilet, washing machine, or any other appliance that uses water. It will likely only worsen the flooding.

Call Your Insurance Company

Your insurance company will advise you on the next steps you need to take. Here are a few basic guidelines:

Document ALL damage to your home by taking photos and making notes. Make a list of things that will need to be replaced. Don’t buy replacement items until you get all the information regarding coverage from your insurance company. Keep all receipts as well.

Your home insurance might cover a flooded basement. Even so, you are responsible for the cleanup and restoration of your home.
