Michigan Escapes Severe Weather, but not the Plumbing

May 12, 2015

650x366_05120141_hd25

Michigan dodged severe weather last night as violent thunderstorms rattled the Plains over the weekend.

“The area of low pressure that caused so much weather havoc the last few days will lift north into the Great Lakes region on Monday,” stated AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Becky Elliott.

As it does, it will send a cold front through the midsection of the country,” Elliott added. This front will be the focal point for the violent thunderstorms.

“The tornado threat will be greatly diminished from the last few days,” continued Elliott, “with damaging winds, hail and flash flooding existing as the main threats. However, with as potent as this storm system has been, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.”

While the threat for blinding and flooding downpours will be equal throughout the day, the concern for damaging winds and hail will be highest through the evening.

Strong storms will linger into Monday night in two main areas; one batch of storms will move through upstate New York southwest into eastern Kentucky while another batch of storms will linger across Texas and Louisiana. The main threats will be locally damaging winds and flash flooding.

The storm will push thunderstorms into the Northeast on Tuesday, but widespread severe weather is not expected.

However, a small number of Tuesday’s storms may still produce gusty winds or small hail.

The greatest threat into Tuesday night looks to be flash flooding across Texas as rain will once again visit some areas that were frequented by torrential downpours over the weekend.

Six courtrooms at the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice in Detroit  The courthouse will still be open Tuesday. Cases in four of the courtrooms have been reassigned, so they will still happen.
“There are no cases cancelled today. Everything is fully operational, and we will be fully operational tomorrow and the rest of the week as well,” says Chief Judge Pro Tem Timothy Kenny. He says the floods may have stemmed from a problematic water pressure released valve.

Restoration crews are at the courthouse.

Ways Mother Nature can Destroy Your Barn

April 29, 2015

1446406_66287862

Mother nature can be unforgiving, and she can also damage your barn in a variety of terrible (albeit creative) ways. Here is what you need to look out for with your barn.

Wind Damage

Winds over 50mph are considered dangerous, but much lower wind speeds can cause trees to collapse and other hazards as well.

The Fallout:

  • Roof and Shingle Damage
  • Window and Siding Damage
  • Property Damage

Rain/Flood Damage

Floods from a drainage basin or heavy rains can surround a structure and damage it.

  • Any body of water, such as a nearby creek or river can overflow and damage your barn.
  • Mold Damage: If water is left in the barn’s building materials, then a mold infestation can begin to grow within 24 hours.
  • Drywall Damage: If you have a finished barn, then water and moisture can make short work of your drywall. Many times the affected drywall needs to be removed and replaced.

Ice/Snow Damage

barn-in-rain-1433308-2-mIce and snow damage typically affects your home’s roof. Snow can cause roof failure if the weight gets heavy enough. Ice dams are also another issue in Michigan.

If you have an ice dam on your roof do not attempt to remove it. You would be much better off calling restoration professionals, but if you want to DIY then you should cut channels in the dam so that water can escape the roof.

Lightning Damage

Lightning can short out electricity in your barn and can cause damage to appliances and plumbing.

Lightning can also lead to…

Fire Damage

Whether are freak act of nature or careless, fire damage can engulf a barn in Michigan. In the case of a major fire, do not fight the blaze, make sure that your loved ones and pets are safe. Make sure that you notify your local fire department as soon as possible.

Hail Storm Damage

Hail is a form of solid precipitation that is produced by cumulonimbus clouds a.k.a. thunderclouds.  Significant hail damage occurs when the hail stones are .75 inches or wider in diameter. Roofs usually take the most damage during the extent of a hail storm.

Storm Damage

Most barns in Michigan are built to withstand rain, sleet, snow, and high winds. Even so, Michigan does get a

Thunderstorms can produce a variety of damaging outcomes to your home and typically leads to many hazardous weather situations. These storms may have high winds, hail, intense rain, sleet, and snow, tornadoes, and flooding, or all of the above, so it is best to keep safe and have an action plan.

Things to Keep in Mind when Working with Your Insurance Company in Birmingham, Michigan

April 7, 2015

Storm Damage Birmingham MichiganIf you are are experiencing storm damage in Birmingham, Michigan, then you will file a claim with your insurance company to help cover the damages. That’s what insurance is for, after all.

You will be dealing with two primary people: your insurance agent and adjuster.

Your insurance agent is your main contact to the insurance company. These are the people who sell policies to customers. Normally, insurance agents do not adjust losses.

Insurance Adjusters “Investigates, interprets your insurance plan, and calculates the covered amount based on negotiated amount or proven pricing database.

Storm Damage in Birmingham Michigan and Your Insurance Company

You will find three common types of Insurance plans:

1. ACV – Policy that pays a value by calculating the substitute cost and deducting some portion of the value for depreciation.

2. RCV – endorsement to an ACV policy modifying it to repay the full cost involving repair or replacement involving items damaged beyond cost effective repair. (Usually, this is payable only once damaged items are really replaced).

3. Peril  Policy – This is a policy which pays provided that certain “named” perils are the reason for loss, rather than “all risk” policy which could cover anything not especially excluded in policy terminology. In fire damage restoration there has to be a ‘fire’ to be considered a covered loss – protein ‘fires’ have no combustion.

Most Insurance plans are Broken Down directly into Four Divisions:

1. Structure

2. Personal Property

  • Personal Property, most of the time, is included in Homeowner’s Insurance. However, in certain instances it will not be covered in it. This type of insurance policy includes items that are not a physical attachment of the home or building. Soft goods will also be covered in this type of insurance.
  • Actual Cash Benefit – is what something actually costs at this time in today’s market or even the price/value of something depending on its usage.
  • Replacement Cost – This is the amount of compensation your insurance company is going to give you on a certain item in order to replace it. Most of the items in your home will be outdated so you will not recieve 100% of the original price you paid for the items lost during the storm. Here’s an example: if you paid $500 a flatscreen TV four years ago, that TV may be valued at half as much of that value, meaning you will have to make up the difference, or 250$ in cost to replace that television.

The Actual cash Value and Replacement Cost will differ from policy to policy. You will need to verify all the information with your insurance agent.

Also, there are things that are not covered by the Actual cash Value or Replacement cost which are things like antiques and jewelry.

3. Additional Living Expense Insurance

Storm Damage Birmingham MichiganThis sort of Insurance takes care of all expenses incurred by an “insured” while they can not live inside of their house.

4. Other Structures (exterior –unattached)

Every Homeowner’s Insurance Policy is unique and as a homeowner it is best to familiarize yourself thoroughly along with your policy so you’re already knowledgeable in the event something happens to your own home.
