Six Life Hacks to Blast Through Spring Cleaning

April 23, 2015

Spring is tough in Michigan. The weather is finally becoming bright and sunny (or at least sunnier) after a long winter. In addition to flip floppy weather, we also begin to prepare for summer. That means a few rounds of Spring cleaning. By why work hard if you don’t have to? Here are a few simple cleaning hacks that will help you breeze through Spring cleaning. Goodbye cruddy mop, hello to sipping lemonade on the porch.

1. Clean the shower while you sleep

We are still at least a few years from each having our own robot maid, but for now just let all of your cleaning agents do the work. Fill a small plastic bag with white vinegar and secure it to your shower head and go to sleep. Voila! You will wake up in the morning to the cleaning shower head you have ever seen. You can even clean tough stains in sinks, shower tiles, and toilets with a similar method.

2. Make use of your tub

It never occurs to many people that they can wash things other than people in bath tubs. You can clean oven racks, blinds, and just about anything that needs to soak to get clean. For the really grimy items just throw in some vinegar and dish soap then sit back and relax. And be sure to clean the tub when you are all done using it! While your stuff is soaking, now might be a good time to check your basement for flooding or water damage. Just sayin’.

3. Remove Pet Hair

How to avoid health hazards when cleaning your home after flood

No one is safe when it comes to floods and other natural disasters. The worst thing about  floods is that they could appear just out of a simple every day mistake

Leaving the water running in your bathroom or forgetting to fix that leaky pipe in your basement could prove to be much more trouble than its worth. In case of a flooding it is very important to take measures immediately in order to avoid any further complications and damages. If you don’t do that, you risk the safety of your real estate property.

Experiencing a flood can be really unpleasant but what’s even worse is the part that comes after that. You will have a lot of work to do which will include the thorough disinfection of every object in your real estate property, as well as the drying of the different premises. The water could not only ruin your furniture and other possessions, but it could also contaminate them with dangerous bacteria. This will be very dangerous for your health and the health of the other members of your family. Therefore, the sooner you begin with the deep cleaning of your home, the better. There is also a possibility to find mould in various places and object in your house which could appear as a results of the high dampness in the property. You can avoid the negative consequences of the flood by taking the following measures:

  • Inspect the damages – First, you have to make an inspection of the entire house, so that you can notice immediately any damages. This will also help you find out which of your possessions could be saved after the flooding and which you will have to throw out. Don’t hesitate to get rid of the things which are damaged beyond repair because keeping them in your home could provoke the growing of mould.
  • Throw out the things which can’t be cleaned – Like we said, you will have to toss out all objects which can’t be cleaned. There are some things which can’t be saved even after a deep cleaning. The fact that they’ve been exposed to the effect of the contaminated water is enough reason to throw them out. If you don’t do it, you will put your health and the health of your family at risk which is not really worth it are saying from CarpetCleaners Shepherds Bush
  • Polish all appliances and surfaces – You can begin the disinfection of your property by focusing on the bigger things like the furniture, the appliances and all surfaces. If you don’t want to use cleaning supplies with chemicals, you can mix warm water and vinegar in a bucket and use the solution for the disinfection. If you have to repeat the procedure a couple of times, until you are certain that everything in your home is spotless.
  • Wash all drapes, bedding and other similar things – Don’t forget to put the bedding, your wet clothes, the stuffed toys and even the drapes in the washing machines, so that you can avoid the health hazards. If you have doubts about the cleanness and safety of a certain object in your home, disinfect it just in case. It is better to lose a little time in cleaning, instead of worrying later about your health.

Keep in mind that a thorough cleaning of your real estate property after a flood could take days. Don’t be in a hurry to finish because on your efforts depend the preservation of your family’s health. When you are done, as well as during the cleaning, you can open the windows to speed up the drying.

Four Reasons We Love Michigan in April

April 17, 2015

file000668753617

1. The Better Weather- We never know what kind of weather Michigan is going to get in April: snow, a tropical heat wave, or both. But if we wanted consistency we’d all move to California. Even so, Spring will burst forward (eventually) and you will rewarded with beautiful displays of colors from plants and wildlife.

2. Sports!- The Red Wings are on another playoff run, trouncing the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 on the road. Aside from playoff hockey, Michiganders can also look forward to the NFL draft, where the Lions are looking to make it to the playoffs for the second year. And the Tigers aren’t doing too bad, either (8-1 at the time of this post).

3. Tastiness- Michigan has seasonal brews from some of the best breweries in the country, Fudge, and it’s just about time to pull out the grill and have a family BBQ. Pick your poison

4. The Water, Duh!- It may not be warm enough to take a dip yet, but  the ice has thawed and anglers are testing the waters. There is tons of good fishing to go around, and plenty of great festivals, such as the Freeland Walleye Festival

Water damage from my washing machine?

Water damage from my washing machine?

Have you ever placed a heavy item in your washing machine only to hear what sounded like a herd of angry cattle running through your laundry room once the spin cycle began? Your washing machine endures a lot of wear and tear over the years and occasionally it can’t take the abuse any more and gives out. Flooding from washing machines is among the  top 10 causes of insurance claims each year.

What makes water damage from washing machine malfunctions especially problematic is that it can enter be all over your home and basement in a few short minutes. If you’re like most people and sometimes exit the house with your washing machine still operating, then you are at risk of water damage.

Should the water supply line break or burst while you’re out of the house, you’re going to come home to a very wet mess. As an emergency water damage company, we see the effects of washing machine floods on a weekly basis. Fortunately, we also are aware of precautions you can take to limit the chances of your washing machine breaking and causing significant water damage to your home.

Why do washing machines malfunction and flood?Waschvollautomat_Constructa_1950er

Washing machines can break for a wide variety or reasons, but here are the main causes of water damage from washing machines along with tips to ensure these issues don’t arise at your home:

1. The pump valve malfunctions or gets clogged

2. The drain hose disconnects

3. The water supply lines burst or the connections loosen

What’s the best way to prevent my washing machine from overflowing?

The most importhant thing you can do to prevent water damage in your home from a washing machine leak is to install a flood stopper. These cost about $150 and are very simple to install. A flood stopper works by placing a water sensor on the floor next to the washing machine. Once the sensor is triggered, the device shuts off the water supply, killing anymore water feeding to the washing machine.

What should I do if I have flooding and/or water damage from my washing machine?

If you don’t have a flood stopper or if you have still sustained a heavy amount of water damage, then the first thing you should do is shut off the water supply lines to your washing machine.

Next, salvage anything that hasn’t gotten wet but is in the path of the water.

Once you’ve done that,  call a water damage repair company like us! The longer you wait for help, the more potential for water damage there will be. So if you are suffering from a flooded basement or washing machine mayhem then call us now and we will be happy to provide you with a free cost estimate for any water damage that may have occurred.
