How to Deal with a Flooded Basement

What NOT To Do After Basement Flooding:

  1. Do not use electrical appliance (including fans or TVs) in or near water.
  2. Do not touch light switches, sockets or outlets.
  3. Do not allow children or pets in the area.
  4. Don’t leave wet fabrics in place – hang them up in a dry place.
  5. Don’t leave books, magazines or other paper items on wet carpet or floors.
  6. Don’t leave colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  7. Don’t use your household vacuum to remove water.
  8. Don’t turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet.
  9. Don’t go in rooms where ceilings are sagging.

What To Do After Basement Flooding:

(Only if Water Damage Area is SAFE from electrical currents)

  1. Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  2. Wipe excess water from wood furniture.
  3. Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions in a dry area.
  4. Hang up wet fabrics, furs and leather goods.
  5. Place blocks or aluminum foil between furniture legs & wet carpet
  6. In summer, turn on air conditioning.
  7. Remove any colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  8. Gather loose items from floors and spread out in a dry area.
  9. Wash hands thoroughly after handling water damaged objects.
